Internship Programs
Law Students
The Collin County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, in partnership
with the SMU Dedman School of Law, has established a law student externship
program for qualified applicants interested in an advanced, hands-on experience
in criminal prosecution.
Students accepted into the program will work toward 2-3 hours of academic
credit while enhancing their professional and academic development. This
will be achieved by direct exposure to many of the divisions within the
DA’s Office, including the appellate, specialized crime, family
justice, and trial divisions. Past assignments have included appellate
briefs and attendance at oral argument in the courts of appeals, career
criminal investigation and case preparation, death-penalty litigation,
and actual participation in jury selection and the presentation of evidence
in the courtroom.
Applicants must be second or third year law students at SMU in good academic
standing with a sincere and demonstrable interest in criminal prosecution.
The program is provided each Fall and Spring semester, with interview
information available in the law school Career
Services Office at 214/768-2797.
Undergraduate Students
The Collin County District Attorney's Office in conjunction with the
University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) provides an intern program for undergraduate
students. A three week rotation through the Felony Trial Division, Family
Justice Division, and the Misdemeanor Trial Division enables the intern
to observe the Criminal Justice system from the inside. In addition, each
intern is required to successfully participate in the Citizen Prosecutor
Academy which provides valuable insight into the operation of the District
Attorney's Office.
